      Arkansas Case Files

      The court records listed below arose from the Elaine Race Massacre which occurred in Phillips County, Arkansas, from September 30 through October 2, 1919.  Racial strife and violence lasted much longer.  The court battles continued through January, 1925.  The briefs and records are in our library’s archives and are available for you to read in the Special Collections Reading Room on the first floor of the library. Hours for viewing the briefs and records are by appointment with Kathryn C. Fitzhugh, kcfitzhugh@ualr.edu, 501-324-9975.  We require that  users complete an application form and display a government-issued photo identification card before using the court records.
